Tax Authority Collects Over 300 Billion Meticals in Taxes in 2022

The president of the Tax Authority (AT), Amélia Muendane, announced this Monday, January 9, that the provisional data of revenue collection shows a realization, until the end of 2022, in gross terms, of 301.84 billion meticais, a figure that is above the established target.

The Budget Law last year set the annual target for tax and customs revenue collection at 293.92 billion meticais, representing a nominal growth of 10.7% in relation to 2021.

Amélia Muendane, who was speaking in Ponta do Ouro, Matutuine District, Maputo Province, during the launch of the ‘Taxpayer Caravan’ (an initiative aimed at raising awareness among potential taxpayers about the need to pay taxes), said that for this year, a target of 357 billion meticais net was set, which means an effective collection of 415.91 billion meticais corresponding to an increase, in gross terms, of 73.49 billion meticais in relation to the 2022 target.

According to the president of the AT, this nominal variation challenges the tax system, making direct contact with the taxpayer urgent and relevant, so that together we can take on the challenges of transforming the economy, through mutual approximation and a more conscious contribution.

“Therefore, we hope that this movement will result in a greater awareness of the importance of I taxes and a growing adhesion of new taxpayers to the system, facilitating tax registration and supporting the legal framework. It will also be a stimulus to voluntary contribution, bearing in mind the list of lectures on taxation,” she said.

In fact, the governor explained that it was because she took into account these vectors of action that she introduced the National Vision of the Future Taxpayer 2020-2040, an integrated tax education and citizenship plan for taxpayers and potential taxpayers for their participation in the active construction of a fair, efficient and transparent tax system.

For the AT, 2022 was a challenging year due to the macroeconomic hangover that resulted from the impact of successive economic and health shocks from the covid-19 pandemic, the effects of which are still being felt.

This scenario required better organization of the system to fully meet the established tax targets.
