Court Says $668.7M To Address Pandemic Would Have Been “Mismanaged”

There have been ” misappropriation of money and other problems in the management of funds for the response to the covid-19″ pandemic, donated by various partners to Mozambique. The revelation, according to “O País”, was made by the Administrative Court (TA), which says it has already forwarded the report to the government.

As it is known, when covid-19 began to ravage the country, the Government designed a budget with all the needs it had to mitigate the effects of the pandemic, and the amount came from various parties with emphasis on the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which disbursed 309 million Meticais, and in total, the Government received 668.7 million dollars, distributed in different areas.

However, everything indicates that there has been a misuse of funds. The Administrative Court, claims to have carried out an audit of the accounts of the above amount, where it showed that the amount was mismanaged.

The Judge Counselor and rapporteur for Public Accounts at the Administrative Court, Amílcar Ubisse, said that the problems detected “are the same as always,” specifying “the embezzlement of public money and undue payments.”

In the same vein, Ubisse referenced by “O País”, revealed that “there are old unsolved problems such as over-invoicing in public works, adding that even if the Administrative Court wants to, it doesn’t have much to do, because there are no well-defined parameters, based on which it will detect theft.”

The judge counselor and rapporteur of Public Accounts of the Administrative Court gave these statements during the working visit that the Planning and Budget Commission of the Assembly of the Republic made, this Tuesday, March 5, to the institution.
