Switzerland will disburse US$10 million for an inclusive development project in the provinces of Nampula and Niassa, in the north of the country, an official statement said.
“This initiative, which is in line with the priorities of the Mozambican government, combines local decentralisation, with adaptation to climate change and its funding, as well as increasing local accountability,” said Laila Sheikh, deputy head of the Swiss mission in Mozambique, quoted in the statement.
The amount will be made available to local governments (municipalities and districts), which should apply it in strategies and initiatives that increase the levels of participation of women, men and youth in local governance processes.
“The effectiveness and sustainability of the project will be ensured by the broad interaction, coordination and synergies between the actors and institutions at various levels of governance, working daily to improve the living conditions of citizens in the provinces of Nampula and Niassa,” said Laila Sheikh.
In addition to Switzerland, which will finance the project, the initiative has the support of the German Cooperation in Mozambique, the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), among others.
