Stock Exchange: Market Capitalisation Grew to Over $3B in Q3

The capitalisation of the Mozambique Stock Exchange (BVM) grew in the third quarter of 2024 year-on-year to 202.303 billion meticais (€3.015 billion), the equivalent of 28.12% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

According to data sent to Lusa on Monday by BVM’s president, Salim Valá, the institution recorded a turnover of 23.99 billion meticals (€357.5 million) in this period, a liquidity index of 11.86% and total financing to the economy of 344.468 billion meticais (€5.133 million).

“At the end of the quarter under review, there were 91 securities listed on BVM, of which 16 were shares and 27 were corporate debt, with the remainder being Treasury Bonds. The number of securities registered with the Central Securities Depository [CVM] by the end of the third quarter of 2024 totalled 311 securities and 26,305 holders,” said Salim Valá.

According to the chairman of the Mozambican stock exchange, the analysis of stock market indicators concerning the same period in 2023 “was once again positive, as had already been the case in the previous quarter”, namely in the number of corporate debt issues, which grew by 35%, turnover (24.1%), the number of listed shares (23.1%), securities registered with the CVM (21%), listed securities (19.7%), the financing of the economy (13.4%), market capitalisation (13.3%) and the market liquidity index (9.5%).

“In terms of the stock market, there were 66 corporate events during the third quarter of 2024, 58 of which were interest payments, seven capital amortisations/repayments, one dividend payment, and the registration of 10 new securities and 231 new investors,” Valá pointed out.

He also added that by the end of the third quarter, one issue totalling 365.95 million meticais (€5.5 million) at an interest rate of 22.5% had been made in the corporate debt market, less than the three issues totalling 1.315 billion meticais (€19.6 million) made in the previous quarter.

In terms of commercial paper, BVM registered two issues totalling 882.7 million meticais (€13.1 million) at a weighted average rate of 14.0%, compared to five issues in the previous quarter totalling 1.277 billion meticais (€19 million) at an average interest rate of 14.6%.

“The number of issues and the amount were lower than the previous quarter, but the interest rate was more favourable this quarter,” he said.

HCB—Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa, SA—was the most traded company in the third quarter of 2024, with 39.5% of the share market. It was followed by CMH—Companhia Moçambicana de Hidrocarbonetos, SA—and CDM—Cervejas de Moçambique, SA, both with a share of 27.9% each.
