Six people died as a result of heavy rains caused by the passage of moderate tropical storm Freddy in Sofala province, central Mozambique. The information was released yesterday, February 28, by the authorities who are now counting the damages caused by the phenomenon.
The delegate of the National Institute for Management and Disaster Risk Reduction (INGD) in Sofala province, Aristides Armando, said the authorities are counting the damage caused by the passage of moderate tropical storm Freddy, which is causing heavy rainfall, causing the loss of human lives.
“Two deaths in Beira, three in the district of Dondo and one in the district of Maríngue. In Maringue and Dondo, the deaths were caused by lightning discharges, and the remaining four were due to landslides and also drowning,” clarified the official.
In a statement quoted by Radio France International (RFI), the National Roads Administration announced the suspension, on Tuesday morning, of traffic flow on the temporary bridge over the Save River, thus interrupting the land link between the south and north of Mozambique.
This decision was taken for safety reasons due to the rapid rise in the flow of the Save River.
It is recalled that storm Freddy hit the country at a time when there were already consequences of intense rains and floods that hit its southern area in early February. According to official data, this phenomenon caused 11 deaths and affected more than 43 thousand people.
