General Protests: Demonstrations Caused Losses of Almost 400M Meticals Due to Closure of Ressano Garcia Border

The country lost almost MZN 400 million due to the ‘half-hearted’ operation of the Ressano Garcia Border and subsequent closure, according to information provided by the spokesman for the Tax Authority, Fernando Tinga.

The Ressano Garcia border was reopened today, following the temporary closure that took place on 6 and 7 November as a result of the vandalisation of the infrastructure in the context of the post-election demonstrations.

Fernando Tinga, spokesman for the Tax Authority, explained that the closure of the border had a negative impact on the country’s economy, since ‘many establishments were closed and some were short of products, especially those imported from South Africa and passing through the Ressano Garcia Border’.

Fernando Tinga also said that the monthly target for the month of November is 1.7 billion meticals, and ‘if we divide 1.7 billion per day, that’s 50 million. We can imagine that there were eight days, so maybe the losses are more or less around 400 million meticals.’

Tinga also said that security conditions had been created on both sides of the border for border traffic.

‘When we talk about security, we’re talking about security in relation to the movement of individuals, means, cargo and goods in general. Therefore, conditions have been created along that corridor so that all those who transit can do so without any anomalous situations occurring that violate the security that is due to any citizen,’ he explained.

The spokesman said that the Ressano Garcia border is back in full operation and that the system and security have been re-established.
