The Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, on Thursday (8) dismissed Max Tonela as Minister of Economy and Finance, a position that will be taken over by Prime Minister Adriano Maleiane, in addition to his current responsibilities, according to the newspaper O País.
In a statement, the Presidency of the Republic said that the head of state, “in the use of the powers conferred on him” by the Constitution of the Republic, “exonerated Ernesto Max Elias Tonela from the post of Minister of Economy and Finance”.
No reasons were given for the departure of Max Tonela, who had held the post since 2022, two months before the general elections on 9 October.
“In a separate presidential order, the head of state appointed Adriano Afonso Maleiane to the post of Minister of Economy and Finance, in addition to his duties as Prime Minister,” the statement added.
Adriano Maleiane had already been Minister of Economy and Finance in Filipe Nyusi’s first government, from 2015 until 2022, when the portfolio was taken over by Max Tonela.
