On Wednesday, June 10, President Daniel Chapo received Gonçalo Saraiva Matias, Portugal’s Deputy Minister for State Reform, in a meeting marked by a reaffirmation of strategic cooperation between the two nations and the European Union.
According to a report by the Mozambique Information Agency, the meeting served to assess the state of bilateral relations and analyze progress in the political, economic, and social partnership, at a time when the country is implementing an ambitious reform program.
At the end of the meeting, the Portuguese official highlighted the productive nature of the talks and emphasized the alignment of priorities between Maputo, Lisbon, and Brussels. “The meeting allowed us to take stock of relations, while also recalling President Daniel Chapo’s recent trip to Brussels and his participation in the Porto Summit,” he said.
The Portuguese minister also expressed confidence in the ongoing reform program and the Inclusive National Dialogue, considering them fundamental factors for strengthening institutional stability and international confidence.
“For Lisbon and Brussels, deepening reforms represents a positive signal to international partners and investors, in a context of growing strategic cooperation,” he stated.
At the meeting, the parties also acknowledged that political dialogue between Mozambique, Portugal, and the European Union has been gaining new momentum, resulting in joint initiatives focused on economic and social development.
Portuguese direct investment in Mozambique currently exceeds 2.1 billion euros, cementing the country’s position as one of the top international destinations for Portuguese capital.
Last year, President Daniel Chapo stated that Portugal is a “friend” of Mozambique’s development and highlighted the importance of bilateral cooperation as a strategic pillar for job creation, income generation, and the building of national economic independence.
“No one develops alone. We need friends. And Portugal is one of those friendly countries that will continue to establish economic relations with Mozambique, with a direct impact on the lives of Mozambican families,” declared the head of state before more than a hundred participants. Chapo emphasized that the ties between the two countries go beyond the institutional realm and find expression on a human level, noting that “Mozambique and Portugal are families forever.”
