The Attorney General of the Republic, Beatriz Buchili, said on Wednesday, November 9, that corruption remains one of the “major obstacles” in the fight against organized and transnational crime in Mozambique and wants “better strategies” to combat the “evil.”
“Corruption continues to be one of the major obstacles in the fight against organized and transnational crime,” said Buchili, during the opening of the three-day meeting between the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) of Mozambique and the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC).
According to the attorney general, corruption is one of the modus operandi that criminals have used in their incursions, so better strategies must be found to fight crime, including in their institutions.
“We cannot tolerate that, as bodies with the duty to prevent and fight corruption, we have colleagues involved in corrupt practices,” emphasized Beatriz Buchili.
According to the responsible, there must be rigor in the selection and admission criteria to avoid the entry of “individuals of dubious conduct” in the PGR and SERNIC, in addition to “ensuring accountability” of offenders to “rescue the confidence of citizens.
Beatriz Buchili also expressed concern about the upsurge in kidnappings and illegal immigration in the country, considering that the crimes, “increasingly sophisticated,” will require new methods of investigation and prevention.
