“Only 2.4% of Target Population in Mozambique Vaccinated so Far” — Filipe Nyusi

Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, said on Wednesday that the country has vaccinated only 2.4 percent of the target population against Covid-19, considering this percentage “insignificant” at a time when the number of cases and deaths due to the pandemic in the country is at record highs.

“So far, around 400,000 people are fully vaccinated in Mozambique, which corresponds to only 2.4 percent of the target population identified in the Vaccination Plan,” Nyusi said, speaking at the ceremony to launch the Mass Vaccination Campaign against Covid-19, which began yesterday in the country.

Qualifying as “insignificant” the number of doses administered, the Mozambican President recalled that the Government intends to inoculate about 17 million people over 15 years old, until the end of 2022.

Filipe Nyusi pointed out that the country is living in the middle of the third wave of the new coronavirus, with the number of deaths, infections and hospitalisations much higher than the peak of the second wave, which took place between January and February and was more severe than the first.

Filipe Nyusi pointed out the shortage of vaccines against the new coronavirus as a major challenge to the goal of mass vaccination, thanking international partners for their support in making the drugs available.

The campaign launched yesterday by the President has as priority groups civil servants, teachers, drivers and collectors of collective transport of passengers, people aged over 50 and combatants of the national liberation struggle.

Mozambique has an accumulated total of 1,500 deaths and 126,391 cases, 76% of which have recovered from the disease.
