Mozambique will receive more than 1.5 million doses of vaccine against the new coronavirus this month, which will allow accelerating the vaccination plan in the country, announced on Wednesday the Minister of Health, Armindo Tiago.
“It is with great joy that we announce that in the coming weeks the country will receive more than 1.5 million doses of vaccine, which are being acquired by the Government of Mozambique,” Armindo Tiago said during a ceremony to receive 500,000 doses of vaccine acquired by the private sector – 139 of which were donated to the Ministry.
Without giving any details, the minister said that the vaccines will speed up the immunization plan in the country, in order to reach the 17 million people that are intended to be covered.
“The Government will continue its efforts to mobilize more vaccines in order to accelerate the vaccination plan against covid-19,” stressed the minister.
Armindo Tiago also announced that there is a possibility that in August, the country will receive about nine million doses also acquired by the Government, through an African Union mechanism.
So far, Mozambique received in March a first donation of 200 thousand doses of vaccines offered to the country by China, followed by a reinforcement of 100 000 doses offered by India and 384 000 by the Covax mechanism, an initiative promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO) in favor of vaccination in poor countries.
The goal is to have vaccinated, during the year 2022, all adults, about 16 million people, a little more than half the Mozambican population.
The country has seen an increase in the number of cases, deaths and hospitalizations this month, after a slowdown between March and May, a situation that worries the Health sector.
Last week, Health authorities announced the circulation of the Delta variant of the new coronavirus, originating in India, warning of its transmission levels.
