The National Statistics Institute (INE) reveals that the data collected last August in the cities of Maputo, Beira, Nampula, Quelimane, Tete, Chimoio, Xai-Xai and Inhambane Province, when compared to the previous month, indicate that the country registered deflation of around 0,12%.
According to INE’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) for August, the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages division was the most notable, contributing around 0,17 percentage points (pp) to the total monthly variation.
Analysing the month-on-month change by product, it’s worth highlighting the fall in the prices of tomatoes (8.3%), lettuce (12,2%), fresh fish (1,0%), diesel (2,8%), cooking oil (1,6%), butter beans (2,1%) and cabbage (4,1%). These contributed around 0,59pp to the total monthly change.
However, some products, in particular dried fish (5,8%), corn grain (8,4%), rice grain (1.5%), petrol (0,7%), coconut (3,4%), complete restaurant meals (0,5%) and cakes with cream or dry cakes (11,4%), bucked the downward trend in prices by contributing around 0,43pp to the total monthly change.
Meanwhile, from January to August this year, the country recorded a price increase of around 2,10%. The Food and non-alcoholic beverages, Restaurants, hotels, cafés and similar and Transport divisions saw the biggest price increases, contributing 0,52pp, 0,40pp and 0,35pp respectively.
Analysing the accumulated change by product, it’s worth highlighting the increase in prices for dried fish, corn grain, onions, urban and suburban semi-collective passenger transport, complete restaurant meals, second-hand cars and beer for consumption away from home. These contributed around 1,47pp to the total accumulated change.
Year-on-year inflation: 4.93%
The INE’s figures for the month under review, when compared to the same period in 2022, indicate that the country recorded a price increase of around 4.93 per cent. The Miscellaneous Goods and Services and Education divisions saw the biggest price increases, rising by 17.34 per cent and 14.12 per cent respectively.
