On Monday 10 February, Mozambique received assurances that it will receive financial support from several international institutions, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank (WB) and the United Nations (UN), for development projects in the areas of agriculture, infrastructure, health, education and governance, the Lusa news agency reported .
According to an official statement, the guarantees were given to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Maria Lucas, by the representatives of the UN in Mozambique, the IMF, the International Finance Corporation, the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the World Bank, after a joint meeting in Maputo.
‘We reiterated the UN’s willingness to continue supporting Mozambique on its journey of sustainable development, with a special focus on the populations most affected by the conflict in the north and natural disasters, as well as the most vulnerable women and children,’ said the UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Mozambique, Catharine Sozi, quoted in the statement.
On 17 December, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) made available ‘255 million meticals (4 million dollars) for assistance to the victims of cyclone Chido, which caused at least 120 deaths, according to the latest government update.’
The World Bank, for its part, has more than 40 active projects in Mozambique, totalling more than 446 billion meticals (7 billion dollars). These projects are part of a partnership focused on sustainable, inclusive and resilient growth, as well as strengthening human capital, with investments in the areas of education, health and social protection.
