The Mozambican government has called for strengthened oversight and environmental education to curb illegal mining, which has been contributing to river pollution and broader environmental degradation. The position was presented on Wednesday by Sónia Muando, National Director of Environment and Climate Change.
Muando’s remarks underscore growing concern within government over the environmental consequences of unregulated artisanal and illegal mining activity across the country, which has been linked to the contamination of waterways and the destruction of surrounding ecosystems.
