Mozambique’s Central Asset Recovery Office (GCRA) has recorded seized assets valued at more than 60 million meticais since the beginning of this year, encompassing real estate, vehicles, other movable property, and monetary funds.
The figure was disclosed on Tuesday in Maputo by Jorge Chivigi, a public prosecutor attached to the GCRA and head of its assets division, speaking on the sidelines of a national meeting of anti-corruption, organised crime, and asset recovery bodies. The gathering runs through Thursday.
“Speaking of 2026, we have seized assets worth more than 60 million meticais, but we also have many others from previous years,” Chivigi said. He noted that assets seized in the context of criminal proceedings are referred to the GCRA.
Upon receiving the assets, the GCRA coordinates with the Asset Management Office, the entity responsible for ensuring their administration, management, and potential monetisation. The seized assets encompass various categories and remain under the stewardship of the relevant competent authorities.
“We have had real estate, vehicles, other movable assets, and also cash — in other words, all types of assets,” Chivigi said, highlighting the breadth of property channelled to the GCRA for management.
The prosecutor also explained that the GCRA has intervened in several high-profile cases, particularly those involving organised crime and economic and financial crime, which constitute the core areas of the office’s mandate. “Most of the high-profile cases have involved the GCRA. All the major cases, so to speak,” Chivigi said.
On the case involving the National Social Security Institute (INSS), Chivigi said he did not have concrete data on assets linked to that investigation. He added that the GCRA has not yet received any property from that case for management purposes.
Regarding proceedings related to national carrier Air Mozambique, Chivigi explained that multiple cases exist, some of which have been archived while another has resulted in an indictment. In those proceedings, the GCRA worked on identifying assets that could potentially be declared forfeited to the state.
