Mozambique and Botswana Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation in Several Fields

The governments of Mozambique and Botswana signed seven memorandums of understanding on Wednesday (10) in Maputo, with a view to strengthening bilateral cooperation ties in various areas, especially security and agriculture.

The documents initialled during a meeting between the head of state, Filipe Nyusi, and his Botswana counterpart, Mokgweetsi Masisi, who is on an official working visit to the country, also aim to boost economic relations between the two nations, focusing on expanding and using the capacity and intelligence of their leaders.

“The instruments cover the sectors of security and public order, agriculture, livestock and food security, trade, industry and investment, information and communication technologies, preventing and combating corruption, social protection and road transport of passengers and goods,” explained Nyusi.

In his speech, Nyusi said that the meeting discussed issues related to the general elections that will take place in October, as well as the fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado province and the end of the Southern African Development Community Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM).

“We talked about terrorism, the withdrawal of SAMIM and the return of the population to their areas of origin. We told them that we are already in a reconstruction phase and we also took the opportunity to thank Botswana for its support,” he emphasised.

Filipe Nyusi also said that the two countries are focused on exploiting Mozambique’s existing logistics corridors, with an emphasis on maritime, rail and road transport.
