Mozambican Local Elections To Cost 138 Million Euros

The local elections next year in the country will cost 9.7 billion meticais (138 million euros), the National Elections Commission (CNE) said on 25 March when it launched the process in Maputo.

For the 2024 general elections, the budget is expected to be 18.7 billion meticais (266 million euros), said Paulo Cuinica, spokesman for CNE.

The launch comes after the Council of Ministers on Tuesday decided to schedule the ballot for October 11, 2023.

Following the Government’s decision, CNE announced the constitution of provincial and district electoral bodies, which should occur within 60 days.

“There is a set of steps that must be fulfilled for the holding of the next local elections, which include the constitution and installation of support bodies,” Cuinica said at a press conference.

He said that the provincial and district bodies would be made up of representatives of the three parties with parliamentary seats (Frelimo, Renamo and MDM), in accordance with current legislation.

The CNE will later propose to the government the dates for the registration of voters for the local elections.

He added that conditions were being created for the accreditation of political party agents, election observers and journalists who would follow the elections.
