The Mozambican state’s current revenue grew by 7.9% up to September, to 232.4 billion meticals, driven by the increase in tax collection, according to the Ministry of Economy and Finance’s (MEF) economic and social balance of the state budget for January to September.
According to the document, this is equivalent to 66.6 per cent of what was expected to be collected in current revenue in 2023, estimated by the government for the whole year at 349.1 billion meticais.
Of the total revenue collected in nine months, as stated in the MEF report, 91.1% relates to taxes collected in that period, totalling more than 211.9 billion meticais.
“Value Added Tax (VAT) was the highest earner for the state from January to September, with 52.4 billion meticais, a drop of 1.6 per cent compared to the same period in 2022 and equivalent to just 57 per cent of the estimate for the whole year, nine months on,” the report points out.
