The Embassy of the United States of America (USA) in Maputo on Thursday (25) expressed its congratulations to Augusta Maíta for her recent appointment as executive director of the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) Mozambique.
According to Lusa, in a statement, the US Embassy highlighted Augusta Maíta’s appointment, which was approved by the Council of Ministers on 23 July 2024. Maíta, a former Minister of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries, will head the MCA Mozambique, the institution responsible for managing US financial support worth 31.7 billion meticais (500 million dollars).
The Embassy statement emphasises that Augusta Maíta’s appointment was the result of a ‘competitive and transparent recruitment process’, which involved interview panels made up of representatives from the public and private sectors, as well as the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and the US government.

According to the note, the position of executive director was one of twenty vacancies advertised earlier this year, attracting a total of more than 4,500 applications.
In March, the government announced the creation of a new institution to manage a total of 33.9 billion meticais (537 million dollars), of which 31.7 billion meticais (500 million dollars) comes from the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC). This new organisation will function as a temporary institution for the next seven years.
Compact II, signed on 20 September on Capitol Hill in Washington in the presence of President Filipe Nyusi, includes significant projects such as the construction of a new bridge over the Licungo River in Zambézia province and the creation of a new ring road in the same province, which has been severely affected by cyclones in recent years.
