Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa Wants Terrorism Defeated in Mozambique

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has said that resolving the conflict in the Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado is a priority for Portugal and the European Union.

On the last day of his three-day visit to Mozambique, the Portuguese head of state visited two units of the European Union military training mission, one in Chimoio, Manica province, and the other in Katembe district, on the outskirts of Maputo.

Rebelo de Sousa underlined the need for Mozambique to guarantee the security of the populations and the victory over terrorism.

“This victory is a military victory on the one hand, but also an economic victory, a social victory, a human victory. Total victory means allowing the populations to carry out their activities, normally, without being conditioned by the existence of terrorism,” he said.

The Portuguese president assured that the relations between Portugal and Mozambique are on an “excellent path” and “moving forward on all fronts”.

The head of state said that as soon as the new executive led by António Costa takes office, a bilateral summit between the two countries, postponed due to the legislative elections in Portugal, will be scheduled.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said he would return to Mozambique in August for the reopening of Quelimane cathedral in Zambezia province, and a visit to Cabo Delgado was on the table.
