The National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (INGD) in Maputo province warned today (9) for taking precaution measures in view of the torrential rain that has been registered since yesterday, Wednesday, in the southern part of the country, especially in the city and province of Maputo.
According to the INGD delegate in Maputo, Amir Abdula, the alert comes from the fact that there have been situations of impassability in some access roads due to flooding, especially in the municipality of Matola.
“In some parts of Maputo province, river waters may overflow some bridges linking district headquarters to localities. We therefore ask citizens not to hit the road if the torrential rains continue,” Abdula warned.
The delegate also appealed to the population not to panic or try to swim in the rainwater: “let’s try to protect our families and communicate in case of flooded houses to see what we can do. If you notice that the rain has stopped, check if the power lines are on the ground. Don’t try to face the water, otherwise we will have very serious problems”, he warned.
In Mozambique, the 2022/2023 rainy season started in October last year and many rivers are now recording water levels above the desirable, causing flooding. The situation has been affecting people’s lives and mobility.
