Japan Provides Support for Victims of Terrorism

The Government of Japan has announced funding in 3.6 million dollars (270 million meticals) to support United Nations (UN) agencies to meet the needs of those displaced as a result of the terrorist actions in some districts of Cabo Delgado province, and by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The donation will be allocated to the World Food Program (WFP), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

According to Japan’s Ambassador Kimura Hajime, Mozambique faces serious challenges due to the insecurity situation in some districts of Cabo Delgado, hence the need to support the country in the fight against terrorism and Covid-19.

“We hope to help the more than 670,000 people displaced from their communities in Cabo Delgado, Nampula and Niassa provinces. The Government of Japan wishes to alleviate the challenges that Mozambique faces,” he said, stressing that of the two countries share good relations.

Myrta Kaulard, UN resident coordinator, indicated that Japan’s contribution will save the lives of tens of thousands of people who have fled terrorist violence in Cabo Delgado.

“This is a great demonstration of solidarity among people in the world and the value of multilateralism. I hope that many others will follow this example, to meet the urgent humanitarian needs in Northern Mozambique,” he said.

In turn, César Tembo, representative of the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD), assured that the authorities will work, in coordination with the UN, to ensure that the donation reaches its recipients.

It is estimated that about 1.3 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance and protection in the three northern provinces of Mozambique.
