Japan Donates €1.5M to Support Displaced People in Cabo Delgado

The government of Japan donated US$1.8 million (€1.5 million) to Mozambique on Tuesday to support people displaced by armed violence in Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country, the embassy said in a statement.

The amount was donated through the World Food Programme (WFP) and should be used for humanitarian assistance to displaced and vulnerable people from host communities in Cabo Delgado, Niassa, Nampula and Zambézia provinces, the Japanese embassy said in the statement.

“This contribution from the government of Japan will allow the WFP to support 25,158 people through food assistance in kind,” the embassy added.

According to the document, the donation will also be used for “monthly and unconditional food assistance for 7,616 refugees and asylum seekers” in the Maratane camp in Nampula.

Armed groups have terrorised Cabo Delgado province since 2017, with some attacks claimed by the Islamic State group. According to the United Nations, there are more than 2,800 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registration project, and 732,000 displaced people.
