Sofala: Tzu Chi Foundation Invests USD 3 Million in New Health Clinic

The city of Beira, capital of Sofala province, will host a new clinic built from the ground up by the Tzu Chi Mozambique Charity Foundation, with an estimated investment of USD 3 million. The health facility aims to strengthen healthcare services in the region and improve access for local communities to essential medical care, according to the Mozambique Information Agency.

The project, as revealed by Dino Foi, president of the Foundation, comes as a direct response to the growing pressure on existing health infrastructure in the city, at a time when demand for medical care has been steadily increasing.

“This is a project that seeks above all to strengthen the response capacity of the health system in the city of Beira, ensuring essential healthcare services for these communities,” the official explained. The future Tzu Chi Beira Clinic will be built in the Ponta-Gêa neighbourhood, where the organisation’s offices in the city will also be located. The unit will provide services in General Medicine, Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Dentistry, Physiotherapy and Traditional Chinese Medicine, adopting an approach that combines conventional and complementary practices.

Although the facility will operate under a for-profit model, Dino Foi assured that the foundation’s humanitarian dimension will remain central. At least two monthly campaigns of free medical consultations are already planned, targeting citizens in situations of social vulnerability in Sofala. Construction works began last September, with completion scheduled for December 2026.

Medicine is one of the four strategic pillars of Tzu Chi Foundation’s global activities, alongside education, charity and the promotion of humanistic culture. Present in Mozambique since 2012, the institution has already supported more than 7,000 people in the health sector through various humanitarian initiatives.

The foundation is currently also involved in the construction of the Nhamatanda Health Training Institute, a project valued at over USD 500,000, and recently delivered the Metuchira Health Centre, budgeted at more than USD 230,000. These initiatives are complemented by ongoing support to the Nhamatanda Rural Hospital, both in terms of equipment and patient nutrition.

Sofala continues to be the province with the highest number of interventions by Tzu Chi Mozambique. Following the signing of a memorandum with the Mozambican government, the foundation intensified its presence in the region in the aftermath of Cyclone Idai in 2019.

With global funding secured by more than 10 million volunteers worldwide, Tzu Chi is currently building 3,000 houses in Sofala—1,673 of which have already been delivered—as well as 23 schools, 14 of which are already completed. Total investment exceeds USD 108 million.
