Mozambique Available to Receive More Turkish Investment

The Mozambican government said on Friday, 27 September, that the country is in a position to receive more Turkish investment in various areas, stressing that it is available for new partnerships to boost development at all levels.

Speaking during a meeting with his Turkish counterpart, Buranettihn Duran, in New York, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations (UN), the Mozambican Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Manuel Gonçalves, reiterated that cooperation between the two nations is going ‘perfectly’ and that there is room to expand relations.

Gonçalves stressed that at the meeting, the parties assessed the state of existing activities and projects, and at the same time recognised that the country had seen improvements in the business environment, with Turkey expressing solidarity on climate change and terrorism affecting the province of Cabo Delgado.

‘Co-operation is going perfectly at all levels, whether political, diplomatic or commercial. We can see that there has been an increase in Turkish investment in Mozambique, and we can also see that there is still room to expand relations,’ Gonçalves said.

In December, the Turkish ambassador to Mozambique, Avni Aksoy, revealed that his country’s government intended to invest 285 million dollars in Mozambique, specifically in the areas of energy and infrastructure. The diplomat explained that the country has an attractive and open market for many investors, with good business opportunities in various sectors, which raises the prospects for development.

‘Turkey is interested in the Mozambican market, and we are available to invest in priority areas. We have companies that are already established and developing their activities in the country, especially in the property sector. We want to work together with the government and the local private sector to achieve sustainable industrialisation in the country,’ he said.

At the time, Avni Aksoy lamented the fact that his country was not on the list of countries exempt from the visa requirement to enter Mozambique, pointing out that this action has made it difficult for more Turkish businesspeople to arrive. ‘We are asking for the visa to be extended so that more investments can be made,’ he said.
