Net foreign direct investment (FDI) in Mozambique totalled $1,918.38 million in the first half of 2026, a decline of 24.1% compared with $2,528.8 million recorded in the same period of 2025, representing a reduction of approximately $610.4 million.
The comparison is derived from calculations based on the Monthly Statistical Information Summary for August 2026 and the quarterly net flows for 2025 drawn from the Annual Balance of Payments Bulletin, both published by the Bank of Mozambique (BdM).
Within the half-year period, investment declined from $1,328.43 million between January and March to $589.95 million between April and June, a quarter-on-quarter contraction of 55.6%.
Extractive industries maintained their dominant position, absorbing approximately $1,620.1 million, equivalent to 84.5% of total first-half FDI. The manufacturing sector accounted for $139.3 million.
By instrument, shareholder loans and trade credits represented 59.6% of flows, at $1,143.56 million. Equity and participation interests totalled $774.82 million, according to tables 12 and 13 of the statistical summary on page 15.
The half-year decline follows a year of strong expansion. In 2025, FDI reached $5,693 million, up 60.2% on 2024, underpinned largely by major projects. The extractive industry concentrated 91.5% of investment that year, while manufacturing represented just 2.1%, according to the BdM's annual bulletin.
In its assessment of that performance, the central bank attributed the growth to capital directed at the oil and gas sector, with particular emphasis on hydrocarbon prospecting and exploration in the Rovuma Basin, alongside a revival in coal and heavy sands activity. That track record underscores the weight that natural resources carry in Mozambique's ability to attract external investment.
