Approximately 105 MM Invested in Rehabilitation of Main Development Corridors

The Government has invested around 105 billion meticais in the rehabilitation and asphalting of 1673 kilometres of roads and bridges in the main development corridors, aiming at reinforcing the regional integration in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The fact was announced last week in Chimoio, Manica province, by the Minister of Works, Housing and Water Resources, Carlos Mesquita, at the end of the week of celebrations of the 42nd anniversary of SADC.

The event was held under the theme “With SADC we build safe roads and share the management of resources towards the consolidation of regional integration”.

Also present was the High Commissioner of the Republic of Malawi, Wezi Moyo, the country that ended the rotating chairmanship of the regional organization, which passed to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The event was also attended by ambassadors from Zimbabwe, Angola, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to Mesquita, with the 105 billion meticals the Maputo-Katembe-Ponta do Ouro road was paved and the Maputo-Katembe bridge built, which opened up an alternative link between Mozambique and South Africa.

The Caniçado-Chicualacuala road was also asphalted, boosting the Limpopo corridor and shortening the road distance between Mozambique and Zimbabwe in the south of the country. There was also the rehabilitation of the Beira-Machipanda road and the asphalting of the Mocuba- Milange road, a corridor linking Mozambique and Malawi.

Also as part of Mozambique’s efforts towards regional integration, the minister noted the asphalting of the Nampula-Malema and Cuamba-Lichinga roads, on the Nacala corridor, and Montepuez-Ruaça, which links Cabo Delgado and Niassa as well as neighbouring Malawi.

The governor also spoke of the asphalting work underway on the Roma-Negomano road, which is part of Mozambique’s efforts to boost international trade, by linking the country to Tanzania, via the Unity Bridge in Cabo Delgado.

“The commemoration of SADC day reaffirms the commitments made by the founders of the organisation, highlighting cooperation and common vision as fundamental pillars in the materialisation of the achievements,” said Mesquita.

The minister also said that integrated management of hydraulic infrastructures, roads and bridges was of capital importance, an action that involves designing a legal framework that responds and corresponds to the demands, as well as regional and international principles of sustainable and integrated management of the road network and national water resources.

The High Commissioner of Malawi in Mozambique, Wezi Moyo, who spoke at the event, said that “although the region has registered important milestones in the framework of regional integration in critical areas, there is the challenge for the countries to always remain united.
