INE: Prices Accelerated by 1.45% in January

The INE’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) indicates that Mozambique “recorded an increase in prices of around 1.45%” compared to December (1.60%), in which, as in previous months, food and non-alcoholic drinks stood out, “contributing around 1.16 percentage points to the total monthly variation”.

This is the fifth consecutive monthly increase, after the CPI recorded four months of deflation: 0.11% in August, 0.05% in July, 0.21% in June and 0.38% in May.

INE adds that the province of Inhambane, with 3.04%, and the city of Xai-Xai (Gaza province), with 2.13%, both in the south of the country, led the way in price rises in January.

It also notes that the data for the first month of the year, when compared to January 2024, indicates a year-on-year price increase of 4.69%, influenced above all by the food and non-alcoholic beverages and restaurants, hotels, cafés and similar divisions, which increased by 12.04% and 5.07%, respectively.

Accumulated inflation for 2024, according to previous INE data, stood at 4.15%, which compares with 5.3% in 2023, but below the peak of almost 13% reached in July 2022.
