Data from the Statistical Yearbook of the National Statistics Institute (INE) indicates that the Mozambican car fleet will grow by 5% in 2022, surpassing 1.2 million vehicles, mainly light and heavy vehicles and almost half concentrated in the city of Maputo.
According to the INE, quoted this Tuesday, 30 January, by the Lusa news agency, at the end of 2021 Mozambique had a total car fleet of 1.1 million vehicles, of which 802,537 were light vehicles and 235,850 heavy vehicles, as well as, among others, 9,624 tractors. However, only 5 per cent of this total was registered.
By the end of 2022, that number had grown to 1.2 million vehicles, of which 528,179 were in Maputo city alone. The Mozambican car fleet was then essentially made up of cars (834,427) and lorries (246,489), as well as tractors (11,371), but overall only 4% of the total was registered.
Central bank data previously compiled by Lusa reveals that the country imported the equivalent of one million euros a day in cars in 2023, with growth expected compared to previous years.
According to a statistical report by the Bank of Mozambique, with data from three quarters of 2023, car imports totalled 314.2 million dollars (286 million euros) in nine months.
For the whole of 2020 (four quarters) these imports totalled 253.8 million dollars (231.8 million euros), the following year they totalled 345.5 million dollars (315.6 million euros) and in 2022 they were 369.3 million dollars (337.3 million euros).
In the first quarter of 2023, car imports by Mozambique totalled 101.7 million dollars (92.9 million euros), the next 112.9 million dollars (103.1 million euros) and the third, from July to September, 99.6 million dollars (90.9 million euros).
Among the total of 1.5 billion dollars (1.3 billion euros) in imports of consumer goods by Mozambique from January to September 2023, cars led the way in this period, with more than 20%.
