The tourism sector in Gaza province, southern Mozambique, saw improvements in the first half of the year, with more than 111 million meticais (1.7 million dollars) invested in building various infrastructures, contributing to an increase in tourist establishments and accommodation capacity.
According to the provincial director of Culture and Tourism, Maria Emília Machangaio, during the period in question, the network of establishments grew from 294 to 304, which directly influenced the increase in the number of accommodation beds, which also rose from 7558 to 7830.
The official quoted by the Mozambican Information Agency said that despite the progress, there was still a lot to be done to develop the sector in that province, calling on entrepreneurs to encourage domestic tourism and the professionalisation of human resources in order to respond to current demands.
‘It is everyone’s duty to maintain and conserve tourist attractions in such a way as to create a development base for local communities, and for the benefits to be directly reflected in revenue generation. Entrepreneurs should invest in energy expansion, infrastructure development and access to drinking water,’ he said.
In February, the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, revealed that more than 40 per cent of the investment projects registered in the country in 2023 were directed towards the tourism sector, earning 7.3 billion dollars.
‘Tourism brought in a total of 7.3 billion dollars, due to the large number of projects received, contributing 8.9 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product, compared to 7.4 per cent in 2022,’ he explained.
He said that the good results are related to the measures implemented by the government, aimed at improving the business environment, developing support infrastructures, restoring wildlife and training human resources.
