In total, during the period in question, the Mozambican Public Prosecutor’s Office processed a total of 84 asset and financial investigation cases, with at least 25 having been finalised, according to the Attorney General’s Office.
In the last 12 months, the Central Asset Recovery Office in Mozambique has recovered an additional 1,385 million meticals (20 million euros) from illicit sources, according to data from the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The figure represents an increase compared to the previous period, when assets estimated at 1,149 million meticals (almost 17 million euros) were recovered, reads a document that takes stock of the work of the Mozambican Public Prosecutor’s Office over the last 12 months, to which Lusa had access today.
In total, during the period in question, the Mozambican Public Prosecutor’s Office processed a total of 84 asset and financial investigation cases, with at least 25 having been concluded, according to the Attorney General’s Office.
Among the assets seized were 30 properties and 48 vehicles, as well as an amount of around 214 million meticals (three million euros), the document adds.
The MP points to the lack of human resources as one of the main challenges in the work of the Central Asset Recovery Office.
“Although the law provides for the Central Asset Recovery Office to include employees from different institutions (…), not all of them are assigned on an exclusive basis,” reads the document.
The Central Asset Recovery Office in Mozambique is a multi-sectoral body under the Public Prosecutor’s Office, responsible for investigating, tracing, seizing and recovering assets.
The body was approved by the government in February 2022, although it had been demanded for years by the Public Prosecutor’s Office and other anti-corruption organisations.
