The President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, recommended that the Mozambican Tax Authority (AT) continue to make efforts to broaden the tax base, as well as to encourage informal operators to contribute to the State coffers through the payment of the Simplified Tax for Small Taxpayers. The AT was urged to combat tax evasion, which still undermines the State’s finances, to modernize systems, and to eliminate operational constraints, which requires innovation and investment.
“To make money, you have to spend money. It is not possible for colleagues in domestic and external taxes to collect revenues without investments. We need to invest in the borders, in resources, to have vehicles in good condition, fuel, and resources within the Tax Authority so that they have the means to collect more revenue,” he said.
Chapo challenged the AT to find practical, sustainable solutions adapted to the reality to increase revenue collection. For this, it will be necessary to promote the digitalization of processes, simplify tax obligations, and create an environment in which taxpayers are treated with respect, fairness, and dignity, and feel proud to do their part.
On the occasion, he instructed the institution to implement ongoing fiscal reforms with firmness and speed. “Expanding the tax base is an urgency, not an option.”
