Mozambique’s Ministry of Labour, Gender and Social Action resumed payment of the basic social subsidy during the first half of 2026, providing assistance to more than half a million households. The preservation of jobs through labour mediation was also cited among the sector’s principal achievements for the period, according to Jornal Notícias.
The figures were presented at the Ministry’s second Coordinating Council session of the year, held in Chidenguele, in the district of Mandlakaze, Gaza province. The meeting brought together officials from across the country to assess the sector’s performance over the first six months.
The session aimed to analyse results achieved, identify key challenges, and set priorities for the months ahead, within the framework of an assessment of policies and actions implemented across the areas of labour, gender, and social action.
Opening the session, Minister of Labour, Gender and Social Action Ivete Alane argued that evaluating the sector’s performance should not rest solely on the number of activities carried out, but above all on the quality of services delivered and the impact of public policies on the lives of communities.
According to the minister, the ability to respond swiftly to citizens’ needs, regularity in subsidy payments, and the achievement of concrete results should constitute the principal performance indicators for institutions under the Ministry’s oversight.
Despite progress recorded in the first half, participants focused their analysis on identifying institutional weaknesses, strengthening coordination among different bodies, and defining concrete measures to improve the quality of services provided to the population.
The session was attended by Ministry officials from all provinces, representatives of the sector posted abroad, as well as social partners and development cooperation partners.
At the close of proceedings, measures were reaffirmed to strengthen social protection, improve the delivery of public services, and increase the impact of policies implemented at the community level.
