The government announced that it has received €58.1 million in donations and financial support for victims of the floods and inundations that occurred in January, mainly affecting the Southern and Central regions of Mozambique.

“At all levels, donations in the form of food, clothing, shelter materials, and monetary aid were channeled. It is worth noting that all monetary assistance received is being used to strengthen the acquisition of both food and non-food items to support the affected populations,” said the Minister of State Administration and Public Service, Inocêncio Impissa.

Responding to questions from parliamentarians, the minister explained that regarding the recovery of infrastructure damaged by the floods, the draft of the 2026 Post-Flood Reconstruction Global Plan is in its final stages. The plan aims, among other measures, to ensure resilient and sustainable reconstruction and to guarantee the revival of the local economy.

Under this plan, Impissa stated that the government expects to carry out immediate humanitarian assistance interventions and restore social services, including access to health, education, water, sanitation, and energy, in addition to normalizing the functioning of the state and local economy in the affected areas.

“Based on this plan, dedicated to post-flood reconstruction, the government will rehabilitate 38 educational institutions, 1,369 classrooms, 136 health units, and restore the functioning of water supply systems in Chókwè, Boane, Xai-Xai, Bilene-Macia, Massingir, Ressano Garcia, and Morrumbene, in the provinces of Gaza, Maputo, and Inhambane, respectively,” he added. The plan also includes the rehabilitation of 5,697 kilometers of roads, 684 kilometers of railway, 16 bridges, as well as the restoration of 98 aqueducts, 16 kilometers of power transmission lines, replacement of 92 substations, 25 kilometers of medium-voltage lines, and 410 transformer stations.

Updated data from the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management (INGD) indicate that the death toll has reached 270. Since October, 869,000 people, equivalent to over 200,800 families, have been affected, with 10 missing and 333 injured.
