Government Approves Strategy to Combat Money Laundering for 2026-30

The Government has approved the Strategy for Continuity and Sustainability in Preventing and Combating Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing, and the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction, as well as the respective action plan for the period 2026-30. The measure aims to strengthen control mechanisms and ensure Mozambique’s compliance with international standards in this area.

The information was released by the spokesperson for the Council of Ministers, Inocêncio Impissa, minutes after the end of the 7th ordinary session of that body, held on Tuesday (10) in the city of Maputo. On that occasion, the government official presented the main decisions taken during the meeting.

Inocêncio Impissa, who also serves as Minister of State Administration and Civil Service, explained that the new strategy aims to ensure the country’s continued compliance with international standards established by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

According to the minister, the instrument sets out guidelines to strengthen the fight against money laundering, terrorist financing, and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, ensuring a more coordinated response among the institutions involved.

The document covers various sectors, including ministries, financial supervisory authorities, financial institutions, law enforcement authorities, and non-profit organizations. Designated non-financial activities and professions, as well as the private sector, are also part of the process.

The approval of the strategy is part of the country’s efforts to consolidate the progress made after Mozambique’s removal from the international “gray list” in October 2025, related to weaknesses in the fight against money laundering.

Mozambique had been included on that list in 2021 due to deficiencies in combating money laundering and terrorist financing. However, the country managed to comply with 26 of the 27 recommendations made by international organizations, including the International Monetary Fund.
