BdM: External Loans to the Economy Decreased by 43.7% in 2025

Disbursements of external loans to the economy fell by 43.7% in 2025, totaling 301.1 million US dollars, compared to 534.3 million US dollars recorded in the previous year, according to preliminary balance of payments data released by the Bank of Mozambique (BdM).

According to the central bank, the performance was influenced by a reduction in external debt contracting by both the Central Government and other sectors of the economy. Disbursements directed to the State recorded a significant contraction, while the private sector also saw a decline in access to external financing, Lusa reported.

Disbursements to companies decreased from 248.5 million US dollars in 2024 to 180.3 million US dollars in 2025. The port and railway sector was the main recipient of these funds, capturing 71 million US dollars. The financial sector received 52.5 million US dollars, about half of the amount recorded in the previous year, while the energy sector absorbed only 17 million US dollars.

According to the BdM, financing granted to energy companies was intended to support the national strategy for diversifying electricity generation sources. Funds allocated to the financial sector were mainly aimed at financing rural activities.

In the case of the Central Government, external loan disbursements fell to 120.7 million US dollars. The central bank attributes this development to reduced inflows from multilateral and bilateral financing, including operations under on-lending agreements and specific projects.
