Japan and Portugal have expressed their intention to strengthen cooperation ties with Mozambique, covering various strategic areas. Both countries are committed to improving their action plans in sectors where they are already involved, with Portugal focusing on boosting the national economy by promoting investment and enhancing the business fabric, as reported on Tuesday, May 13, by the General Commissioner’s Office of Mozambique for EXPO OSAKA (COGEMO) through a statement.
According to the note, for Portuguese authorities, economic development and strengthening businesses are essential pillars for the country’s prosperity. However, this vision does not overlook the importance of solidarity, mutual respect, and the value of cultural ties, particularly strengthened by the shared Portuguese language.
This stance was reaffirmed during a visit by a Portuguese delegation to the Mozambique Pavilion at EXPO 2025 OSAKA, led by the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (SENEC), Nuno Sampaio. The event has been taking place in the Japanese city of Osaka since April 13.
“I believe we should intensify cooperation for development, but above all, consolidate economic and business relations. The economy and businesses can be the foundation of a solid relationship that contributes to the progress of both countries,” stated Nuno Sampaio during the visit.
On the same day, the Pavilion of Mozambique also received a visit from the Governor of the Japanese city of Tottori, Hirai Shinji. On this occasion, the Japanese official advocated for deepening cooperation between Mozambique and Japan, highlighting the support his country has provided in areas such as education, healthcare, human resources development, infrastructure, and agriculture.
Despite the existing ties, Hirai Shinji believes there is still much to discover about the country: “We came to the Pavilion of Mozambique to better understand what this nation has to offer Japan and the world, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals. I was impressed by the involvement of Mozambican youth in projects related to artificial intelligence and robotics — areas that are key to the country’s future,” said the official.
The Pavilion of Mozambique also hosted a delegation from Zambia, led by Evans Muhanga, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism of that country. The Zambian representative reiterated the importance of intercontinental cooperation, stating that the unity between African countries is essential to overcome common challenges and boost regional economic growth.
For the General Commissioner of Mozambique for EXPO 2025 OSAKA, these meetings represent a valuable opportunity to strengthen relations with international partners and promote a positive image of the country on the global stage.
Mozambique is participating in EXPO 2025 OSAKA with the theme “Education and Work using Artificial Intelligence and Robotics,” aiming to stimulate the adoption of these technologies in line with the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda.
The country is taking advantage of its presence at this international event to share experiences, promote its potential, and highlight investment opportunities, with the goal of positioning itself as an attractive destination for business and strategic partnerships.
