The European Union (EU) will provide 60 million euros to support basic education and gender equity programmes in Mozambique.
The fact was announced in Chiúre, in Cabo Delgado province, by the EU Ambassador, Antonio Sánchez, during the re-inauguration ceremony of Nahavara Primary School, rehabilitated and equipped by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), with EU funds, as part of the recovery of infrastructures resilient to natural events.
At the moment, according to Sánchez, contacts are being made with the Ministry of Education and Human Development (MINEDH) to define the actions to be financed with the funds announced.
During the ceremony, the partners reaffirmed their commitment to ensure the continuity of dignified and safe learning for the children of Cabo Delgado.
In this regard, the Minister of Education and Human Development, Carmelita Namashulua, said that “in recent years, Mozambique has been affected by several calamities that oppose the efforts we have been making for the creation of basic conditions, aiming at the welfare of our populations, so despite the efforts of the government, to date we have a need for 2 222 classrooms and about 30 000 desks.
“We renew calls for such support to continue to be made. The School that we witness the inauguration today had funding from the European Union in coordination with UNICEF. Thus, we want on behalf of the children to thank all partners who have supported us,” he concluded.
