Mozambique’s Minister of Economy, Basílio Muhate, said on Thursday (12) in the city of Nampula that the country may restrict certain imports in order to strengthen domestic production and promote sustainable industrialisation.
According to Basílio Muhate, the Government remains committed to supporting national production by creating conditions that allow Mozambican industries to grow stronger and contribute to sustainable economic development.
The minister explained that, if necessary, measures could be adopted to limit specific imports in order to protect and stimulate the activity of national industrial units.
Basílio Muhate is currently in the city of Nampula to assess the functioning of processing industries and several commercial establishments, in a visit aimed at understanding the reality of the productive sector in the region.
During the visit, the Minister of Economy indicated that a process is underway to better define the country’s import policy, involving certain specific products.
Among the examples mentioned are products such as rice and wheat, whose imports are currently being analysed within the framework of this process.
According to Basílio Muhate, the definition of these measures is intended to boost the activities of national manufacturing units and help Mozambique move towards a more sustainable economy.
