Mozambique’s Confederation of Economic Associations (CTA) said that there will be salary readjustments in the country this year, in a statement today after a meeting of the labour consultative commission in Maputo.
“All sectors have reached agreements, which means that there will be wage adjustments. It is a fact that we already have agreements and from here we will wait for the percentages (of increases) for the future,” said Paulino Cossa, a representative of the CTA, in statements to journalists after the meeting, which involved the government, employers and unions.
The Mozambican employers did not give any dates or percentages for an increase in Mozambique’s basic salary, which currently stands at 8,758 meticals (127.8 euros).
The National Confederation of Free Trade Unions of Mozambique (Consilmo) argued that increases should be based on the country’s basic food basket, considering that this would help workers respond to market demand.
“In the negotiations on the minimum wage, this issue of the basic basket is put to one side, there they only discuss the delta and production, but the best thing would be the basic basket,” said Boaventura Simbinde, a representative of Consilmo, noting, however, that “the most important thing is for the basic wage to be changed”.
“As soon as wages are discussed in the sector of activity, the expectation is enormous for both employers and workers,” said Clara Munguambe, a representative of the Mozambique Workers’ Organisation – Trade Union Centre.
The last readjustment of the minimum wage in Mozambique took place in April 2023.
