Wash your hands almost constantly, use alcohol gel, always wear a face mask and avoid crowds. These are some essential rules recommended as a method of prevention against covid-19. Although these are simple and accessible methods for everyone, the fact is that there are many people who simply do not comply.
The informal markets in Maputo are one of the biggest examples of the disregard of the rules. Almost everyone has face masks, but when it comes to social distancing, operators say that it is simply not possible.
Against all recommendations, the country continues to register parties and celebrations at all levels. And this is where, according to the government, the foci of contamination reside.
The result of this neglect is frightening every day. The figures indicate that the country currently has just over 7 800 active cases and over 920 deaths.
According to the National Institute of Health, quoted by VOA, these figures are just the beginning of a worsening situation that, depending on behaviour, could last for another three months.
Vaccination continues to be one of the Government’s bets. The plan is that by the end of the year, about 17 of the 30 million Mozambicans will have been vaccinated, but at the moment, less than two percent of the estimated number have received the vaccine. One of the problems at the moment is access to vaccines.
The international community, through the COVAX mechanism or bilateral partnerships, is lending a hand, as happened on Monday, with the arrival of 180,000 doses of vaccine.
