Corruption Index Falls in Mozambique, Report Says

Mozambique continues to feature in the Corruption Perception Index, a global indicator that assesses the degree of corruption in each country’s public sector, based on the perception of experts and businesspeople. The information was published this Tuesday, 11 February, by the Carta de Moçambique news portal .

Drawn up by Transparency International, the report for 2024, released on Monday 10 February in Berlin (Germany), reveals that Mozambique fell one position compared to 2023, from 145th to 146th place.

According to the assessment, Mozambique scored 25 points on a scale of zero to 100, a score that has been maintained since 2023 and also recorded in 2017, 2019, 2023 and 2024.

In the last 12 years, the country’s best score was 31 points in 2012, 2014 and 2015, while in 2013 it reached 30 points. However, during Filipe Nyusi’s two terms in office, the country achieved a maximum of 27 points in 2016.

In 2023, Mozambique shared 145th place with Nigeria, Liberia and Madagascar, but these three nations managed to improve their ranking in the 2024 Index. Liberia now occupies 135th place, with 27 points, while Madagascar and Nigeria have risen to 140th place, with 26 points each.

The report does not specify the challenges the country faces in the fight against corruption, but emphasises that the Sub-Saharan African region recorded an average score of 33 out of 100 on the Corruption Perceptions Index.

‘However, despite this very low annual performance, there were African countries that invested in the fight against corruption and achieved notable progress,’ the document emphasises, referring to the Seychelles (72 points), Cape Verde (62), Botswana and Rwanda, both with 57 points.

Among the 180 countries assessed globally, the Corruption Perceptions Index continues to be led by Denmark, with 90 points, followed by Finland (88 points) and Singapore (84 points). At the bottom are Venezuela (10 points), Somalia (nine points) and Sudan (eight points).
