Filipe Nyusi said that corruption negatively impacts on the quality of life of low-income Mozambicans, slows development, endangers the normal functioning of institutions and discredits the country’s image abroad.
The Head of State was speaking in Nampula during the International Anti-Corruption Day, when he inaugurated the newly built building of the Provincial Anti-Corruption Office and launched the strategy to fight corruption in public administration 2023/2033.
This year, the occasion was celebrated under the slogan “20 Years of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, Uniting the World Against Corruption”. Nyusi urged judicial magistrates to spare no effort in fighting crimes of corruption and to put in jail people and managers who engage in the misappropriation of the public purse.
In a specific reference to Nampula province, the President said that in recent times there has been a considerable number of managers of public institutions engaged in the misappropriation of funds intended for the operation of these, and most of them are men.
He said that public managers cannot and should not be afraid of inspections, as they contribute to the improvement of accountability and ensure a healthy environment and an impartial performance of the inspected.
