The National Elections Commission (CNE) announced on Tuesday (9) that a total of 3.1 million people have already been registered, corresponding to 31% of the approximately ten million potential voters.
According to the body’s explanation, in the first 17 days of the census (20 April to 6 May), the number of people registered has oscillated, there being days when the flow is lower. “On the 26th we registered 212,000 people in the system and on the 6th there were only 163,000.”
In terms of turnout by provinces, the CNE stressed that the highest rate of registration was in Gaza with 45 percent, followed by Niassa with 22 percent.
“After Gaza comes Cabo Delgado with 40 percent, Manica, 38 percent, Inhambane with 34 percent, Maputo City, 32 percent, and Maputo province with 31 percent. The remaining provinces have percentages below 30 percent,” he said.
Voter registration for the sixth local elections will run from 20 April to 3 June. It is estimated that close to 10 million people will be registered in the 65 municipal cities and towns across the country.
The municipal elections, a process that takes place at five-year intervals, are scheduled for 11 October 2023, with the last ones held on 10 October 2018 in 53 municipalities.
