China Forecasts 2.8 Billion Passenger Trips Over Golden Week Holidays

Chinese authorities are forecasting approximately 2.8 billion passenger trips during the ten-day holiday period encompassing the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day, according to state media.

The Mid-Autumn Festival runs from Friday, 25 September through Sunday, while the National Day holidays — known as the 'Golden Week' — take place from 1 to 7 October, bringing the total celebratory period to ten days.

Vice Minister of Transport Li Yang, quoted by the People's Daily, explained that 'this year, there are only three working days between the Mid-Autumn Festival and the National Day holidays, meaning some people will enjoy an extended break of up to 13 days.'

During the Mid-Autumn Festival period, the government projects around 650 million inter-regional trips, averaging 217 million per day — a slight increase compared with normal days.

According to Li, travel will be driven primarily by visits to family and friends, with growing demand also recorded for suburban and rural destinations.

During the seven-day National Day holiday, passenger traffic is expected to reach 2.13 billion trips, averaging 300 million journeys per day.

Road travel is projected to remain dominant, accounting for more than 90% of total trips. On the first day of the National Day break alone, authorities estimate a peak of 71 million vehicles on the country's motorways.

Rail and air transport are also expected to post moderate growth, with average daily passenger volumes rising by approximately 1.4% and 0.6%, respectively.
