Nedbank Mozambique marked 15 years of operations on 22 August, celebrating what the institution describes as ‘a journey defined by growth, technological transformation and the building of long-term relationships with clients, employees, shareholders, partners and Mozambican society — and, above all, by the trust of those who backed this project when it was still a promise.’
Founded in 2011, the bank began operations with branches in Maputo and Matola before expanding the following year to Beira, Nampula and Tete. Today, Nedbank Mozambique is present in seven of the country’s main cities through a network of 15 branches, serving retail, corporate and institutional clients.
According to a press release issued by the bank, one of the defining moments in its history came in 2014 with the entry of Nedbank Group into its shareholding structure. The group counts more than eight million clients and operates across several African markets. In 2021, the group increased its stake to 87.5% of share capital, consolidating its long-term commitment to the Mozambican market and initiating the rebranding of the institution to Nedbank Mozambique.
‘This evolution made it possible to combine the locally developed knowledge and proximity with the experience, capability and scale of one of Africa’s largest financial groups,’ the statement reads. In recent years, the bank has also stepped up investment in technological infrastructure, cybersecurity and digital channels, with the aim of making the banking experience simpler, more efficient and more secure.
Client satisfaction remains one of the institution’s strategic priorities. Nedbank Mozambique has also achieved a market-leading position on this measure, as tracked through its Net Promoter Score (NPS).
Nedbank Mozambique states that it intends to continue developing capabilities, strengthening its organisational culture and preparing its teams for new ways of working and serving clients.
In 2026, the bank also saw several of its initiatives recognised with industry awards, including Best Financial Literacy Program for its NedEduca financial education programme and Best Mobile Banking App for its MyUey application. The brand was also named a Superbrand Mozambique.
For Joel Rodrigues, Chief Executive Officer of Nedbank Mozambique, the 15-year milestone represents, above all, a collectively built story: ‘An anniversary like this only makes sense if we acknowledge those who made it possible. These 15 years belong to our clients, who trusted us; to our employees, who built this bank every day; to our shareholders and partners, who believed in our project; and to Mozambique, where this story began and where we want to continue to grow. We turn 15 without nostalgia, but with curiosity. What drives us is not what we have already done, but what we can still do for those who choose us. We want to continue making banking simpler, closer and more relevant for our clients, using technology to improve their experience, supporting businesses and families and contributing to the country’s economic and social growth.’
Nedbank Mozambique states that it intends to continue developing capabilities, reinforcing the organisation’s culture and preparing its teams for new ways of working and serving clients.
‘In marking 15 years, Nedbank Mozambique reaffirms its confidence in the country’s future and its ambition to remain a relevant partner for Mozambican individuals, businesses and institutions,’ the statement concludes.
