The number of electronic money agents in Mozambique approached the 500,000 mark in the second quarter of 2026, reaching 494,955 nationwide. The figure represents an increase of 27,333 agents compared with the 467,622 recorded in the first quarter of the year.
Data from Banco de Moçambique’s financial inclusion reports, compiled by Lusa, show that electronic money services continue to establish themselves as one of the primary channels for expanding financial inclusion across the country. Through these services, users can make payments, transfers, and withdrawals without visiting a traditional bank branch.
Mozambique currently has three electronic money operators: M-Pesa, e-Mola, and M-Kesh. All three provide financial services via mobile phone and represent an important avenue for access to financial services, alongside the country’s existing banking network.
Taking into account traditional banking and all other access channels, Mozambique had 532,761 financial service access points at the end of June, an increase of 44,861 compared with the end of the first quarter of 2026. Maputo city recorded the highest concentration, with 87,833 access points.
Nampula ranked second with 78,089 access points, followed by Maputo Province with 74,168. Together, the three regions account for a significant share of the country’s total financial service access points.
Despite the expansion of the electronic money network, traditional banking maintained coverage across 128 districts, equivalent to 82.6% of the national total, unchanged from the previous quarter. Bank branch density stood at 9.09 per 10,000 square kilometres, compared with 9.13 in the first three months of the year.
At the end of the second quarter, Banco de Moçambique recorded 650 bank branches, 77 microbank and credit cooperative branches, and 329 banking agents. The network also included 1,291 automated teller machines (ATMs) and 31,316 point-of-sale (POS) terminals.
The data are drawn from Banco de Moçambique’s statistical indicators reports on financial inclusion and the distribution of access points for the second quarter of 2026. The indicators track the evolution of the financial services access network across the country through the end of June.
