The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Moza Banco, João Figueiredo, argued that the Mozambican financial sector should take the lead in the transition to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible economy. The statement was made during the ‘CEO Business Lunch’, held recently in Maputo, where the manager emphasised the crucial role of financial institutions in promoting sustainable practices, according to a statement from the institution.
According to João Figueiredo, sustainability can’t just be seen as a social responsibility action, but as a fundamental strategic axis for the competitiveness and resilience of companies in the current economic scenario.
‘Sustainability isn’t just a choice, it’s today’s commitment to guaranteeing tomorrow,’ he said, emphasising that Moza Banco has been incorporating this vision into its operating model.
Moza’s chairmans emphasised that environmental and social challenges also represent opportunities for the financial sector, which can drive sustainable development through innovative products and solutions.
‘As a financial institution, we have a responsibility to lead by example and be a catalyst for change in the Mozambican market,’ Figueiredo stressed.
Moza Banco’s commitment to sustainability materialises in various initiatives, including the ‘Let’s Plant Trees’ project, promoted by Clube Moza, the Bank’s social arm. The initiative aims to plant one million trees along the Mozambican coast, helping to preserve coastal ecosystems and mitigate climate change.
So far, the project has benefited areas such as the Xefina Islands in Maputo and the coastal area of the town of Maxixe in Inhambane, where hundreds of casuarina saplings have been planted by the Bank’s employees.
He emphasised that the financial sector must adopt a proactive approach to integrating sustainability, promoting responsible investments and encouraging the development of business practices in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Moza Banco reaffirms its commitment to ‘Make it Happen’ in the sustainable transformation of the financial sector, demonstrating that it is possible to reconcile economic growth with environmental responsibility.
