Metix Instant Payment System Surpasses 11,000 Daily Transfers

Mozambique’s instant payment system Metix is now processing more than 11,000 transfers per day, having tripled its transaction volumes since entering operation in March 2026, according to data released by the Bank of Mozambique (BdM).

The figures were published in a communiqué issued following the Monetary Policy Committee (CPMO) meeting held on Wednesday, 30 July, in Maputo. The central bank stated that the new platform is contributing to the growth of digital financial transactions in the country.

“The implementation of the instant payment system (Metix) is energising financial transactions,” the BdM said, adding that there is “a trend of increasing use of this system, which reflects a growing preference for carrying out interbank transfers immediately, conveniently and free of charge.”

According to the communiqué, “since its entry into production in March 2026, the number of transfers has tripled to more than 11,000 per day.” Metix was launched on 16 March by Bank of Mozambique Governor Rogério Zandamela as part of the modernisation of the National Payment System. At the launch, Zandamela explained that the platform would enable transfers between bank accounts within seconds and without charging fees to individual users.

Developed over approximately two years, the system operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Transfers can be made through the mobile applications and websites of participating banks, as well as via USSD channels, which are accessible on any mobile handset and do not require an internet connection.

The platform is operated by the Sociedade Interbancária de Moçambique (SIMO) and integrates banks, microbanks, electronic money institutions, and other payment service providers authorised by the central bank. Participation by digital wallet operators is mandatory.

The CPMO also noted that financial inclusion levels in Mozambique continue to rise, driven by the digitalisation of services and the expansion of electronic money institutions. “Between December 2024 and May 2026, the number of access points to financial services increased by 47.0%, reflecting primarily the growth of electronic money agents by 54.0%,” the communiqué stated.

Over the same period, the number of electronic money accounts grew by 18.0%, “evidencing the growing use of digital financial services by the adult population.” The BdM attributed this performance partly to “the impact of interoperability between electronic money institutions, banks, microbanks and other payment service providers through SIMOrede.”
