Esselina Macome has recently assumed the presidency of the Mozambican Banking Association (AMB), following the inauguration of the institution’s new governing bodies for the 2026–2028 term, at a time when the financial sector faces challenges related to financial inclusion, support for the productive sector and the acceleration of digital transformation.
According to the newspaper O País, in the new leadership structure, Esselina Macome will be supported by Luís Aguiar, who takes on the role of vice-president of the association representing Banco Comercial de Investimentos (BCI). The AMB board now includes representatives from six banking institutions.
In her first intervention after taking office, the new president committed to ensuring continuity of the work carried out by the outgoing leadership, advocating an approach focused on responding to the current demands of the national economy.
Among the priorities highlighted by Esselina Macome are expanding access to financial services, strengthening support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and accelerating the digitalisation of banking operations.
She stressed that strengthening the financial system remains a key factor in supporting economic growth and expanding opportunities for financial inclusion in the country.
Meanwhile, Luís Aguiar brings more than 35 years of experience in the banking sector, including 10 years in Mozambique. With a solid background in both finance and academia, Esselina Macome also serves as associate professor at Eduardo Mondlane University and executive director of Financial Sector Deepening Mozambique (FSDMoç), an organisation dedicated to developing the national financial system.
